Project Highlights

Phase I (1992 to 1997) - Education and Demonstration

  • Developed a RAC and engaged natural resource management agencies
  • Completed four Riparian BMP Demonstrations
  • Held four educational workshops on riparian management
  • Created a variety of educational materials
Phase II (1998 to 2003) - Capacity Building and Implementation
  • Established staff to provide technical assistance
  • Completed eight riparian BMP demonstration sites
  • Wrote 341 management plans representing over 28,000 riparian zone acres
  • Restored 74 miles of riparian zone using 20 different types of BMPs
  • Hosted four basinwide training workshops
Phase III (2003 to 2007) - Implementation and Technology Transfer
  • 13 miles of restored riparian zone
  • 66 riparian forest management plans for 6286 acres
  • Provided over $332,000 in cost-share to assist over 50 landowners and communities
  • Spent $598,742 from 319 funds (46% of grant)
  • Assisted over 50 producers (not including technical assistance and FRM Plans)
  • Local cost-share contributions of $136,000 ($92,000 is from sources other than land owners)
  • Helped to provide over $80,000 from other Federal Programs
  • Provided technical assistance to programs in Barnes and Mercer Counties
Phase IV (2008 to Present) - High Priority Watersheds in the Lower Red River Basin
  • Project guidance and review of cost share requests for technical soundness
  • Develop riparian restoration plans for 75 miles of riparian restoration
  • Maximize water quality benefits for riparian restoration
  • Install 75 miles of riparian restoration in targeted reaches
  • Develop designs for channel, stream and shoreline restoration projects
  • Rancher consultation, review of range and forestry recommendations
  • Organize volunteer riparian restoration projects and participate in ECO education camps
  • Develop new riparian range and forestry management recommendations
  • Develop brochures, articles and field training sessions

Current Projects

  • Servicing requests from over 35 landowners with riparian issues
  • Developing stream management plans for reaches of Cart Creek, Tongue River, and Sheyenne River
  • Providing riparian technical assistance to over four watershed projects in RRB
  • Actively cooperating with NRCS to implement WHIP and CRP in 5 counties.
